To help prevent any serious injury or medical incidents we recommend the following in your preparation for this event:

Skin Safety

  1. Sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher applied to all of body (do not forget the ears and nose)
  2. Lip balm with SPF 30 or higher 

Vision:

  1. Sunglasses (decrease eye strain - reserve physical and mental energy)
  2. If you use contacts: extra set of Contacts, holder and rinse solution. 
  3. Cap or preferably a large brimmed hat to help keep sun out of face and eyes.

Hydration & Nutrition:

Hydration is extremely important in order for you to regulate body temperature (cooling down). Dehydration is a major cause for cramping and poor muscle function (loss of strength). It also leads to poor mental focus. Stay constantly hydrated throughout the day. You can check your weight during the event. Avoid losing any weight as the day progresses.

  1. A refillable bottle for water refills (preferably insulated so drinks can stay cold)
  2. Electrolytes (Nuun tablets) (prevents cramping)
  3. Salt tabs (prevents cramping)
  4. Nuts or snacks (maintaining energy levels)

Other:

  1. Towel (to dry skin after rinsing off sand in ocean) Not drying skin and allowing it to air dry can cause dry skin. Dry skin tears easier.
  2. Flip flops. The sand gets very hot.
  3. Consider taking frequent quick dips in the ocean as to regulate body temperature. This will help you retain energy levels for a prolonged period of time.
  4. Stay in shade as much as possible during the event.
  5. Try to sit or lay down between bouts. Being on your feet can wear you down fast.
  6. Also don’t forget any medications that you may need or need to take before, during or after the event.
